Sisters, 1980

Gabrielle has dreamy questions.
She leans into me and
Whispers them. At the ocean, one by one
Into my bewildered ear.

Does God have beliefs?
Do pigeons like us?
Do angels age?
Will you always love me?

I hold her to keep from
Falling into the darkest
Places, the empty spaces
Of a life without her
Questions.

I answer: No, yes, No
And the last, the one
She's waited for, I

Go under water to find,
Spelling out three letters in
Tiny bubbles that just break the surface
And disappear.
