Vesuvius and Me

That's me, and the blob in the distance is Mt. Vesuvius.

[The volcano dominates the slopes on which Pompeii was built.]

Over 4000 feet high, the volcano is still active, occasionally producing earthquakes or burping out clouds of dust. I overheard a Pompeii tour-guide claim that before the big one back in 79, Vesuvius was over 8000 feet tall. I didn't believe him, but the people in the crowd nodded their heads in agreement.
