A Roman Pool

The gradual slope of this pool would have made it ideal for swimmers of all skill levels. The pool was fed by a canal from the nearby Sarno river, with continuous drainage to the city's sewers. In the days before chlorine, you would definitely want a continuous flow of water through your public swimming area. The mosaic floors and painted plaster walls have long disappeared.

[20 meter square pool, drained.]

Rumor has it that one of Pompeii's directors in the early part of this century had the pool filled as his private swimming hole. That could never happen now with two million tourists wandering through Pompeii every year.
