House of the Dead Dog

Properly known as the House of the Vestals, this sprawling mansion covered much of a city block. Its lavish peristyle was surrounded by paintings with mythological themes. A fine spot for a dinner party.

[Decorated columns.]

When wandering through one of the back rooms here we found a surprise inhabitant. In addition to this odd creature the room held an entrance to a downward sloping tunnel dead-ending well below ground level. It is likely that next summer's excavation will include an investigation of this passage. Where does it lead? A hidden cultic center? A wine cellar?
