Oracle of Cumae

About 15 miles up the coast from Pompeii was the Oracle of Cumae, one of the most important Italian religious/political sites outside of Rome. The Oracle's sanctum sanctorum was part of a complex of rooms cut into the granite of the Cumaean hillside. In order to reach this room one had to walk down this corridor, lit at intervals by windows cut through the rock.

[Hexagonal-shaped corridor with alternating dark and light.]

The light dark and shadows of this entrance hall would put a visitor in an appropriately awed and receptive state of mind for the prophecies to come.
