The last day two of us hired a car and guide and went south of Cairo about 40 miles to the Red Pyramid and Bent Pyramid at Dashur

and to Meidum (where the mummified geese were found). After a great day of pyramid exploring, we were invited to tea in the Captain's guard hut. Inside, two cots. On one, a man slicing tomatoes into a bowl between his legs. On the floor, a rock with a solenoid coiled into it like a serpent. The stove, it was. Someone brought water in an olla. Hassan, the tea-brewer, crumbled mint leaves, added a bit of boiling water--and voila, glasses of hot, mint tea. The Captain toasted us, and we toasted all the Egyptians. A very festive occasion.
