Shadow of Evaporation

by Freeman Ng

Sky unexpectedly
bright after rains (paradox
of heated sunward surfaces
and chill air) yet I saw
waves and waves
of vague shadows passing,
flicker in the air out of the corner of an eye
and on the ground.

No vent or pipe
sent up smoke from behind
the red brick square
of classrooms framing sky.

The tree dipped crooked limbs
outward, curved
slender knobbed ramifications
into cloudless blue.

I saw only
an invisible plane's pulsing trail,
thin billows spurting
and dissolving, evidently
blown away by great unfelt
winds high in the air.
